Beverage Research & Development Services

We develop beverage formulas and associated flavor systems structured for real-world commercial production.

Who This Development Structure Supports

Our R&D services are structured for:

Emerging Beverage Brands
Teams building a new product from concept through first production-ready formula.

Existing Brands Requiring Reformulation
Products needing adjustment due to ingredient changes, processing updates, shelf-life challenges, or cost optimization.

Producers Transitioning to New Processing Methods
Brands adapting formulas for carbonation, hot fill, aseptic, or alternative manufacturing environments.

Development work is aligned with defined production goals and real-world processing conditions.

Structured Beverage Development

We develop beverage formulas and associated flavor systems aligned with defined processing methods, shelf-life expectations, and packaging formats. Projects may involve new product creation, reformulation, stability adjustments, or adaptation to new processing environments.

Development work focuses on achieving balanced beverage performance through coordinated adjustment of acidity, sweetness, and flavor interaction within the constraints of the intended production system.

Beverage Formulation Capabilities

Formulation decisions are evaluated within the context of real production conditions — not isolated bench performance. Development work is structured to align ingredient selection, processing method, and intended distribution model from the outset.

Our capabilities include:

  • Complete beverage formula development integrating acid, sweetener, and flavor balance
  • Flavor system optimization within defined processing constraints
  • Syrup and concentrate systems (4+1 and 5+1 configurations)
  • Carbonated and non-carbonated beverages structures
  • Stability-oriented formulation adjustments
Beverage Formulation Model

Beverage formulation requires coordinated control of three primary variables: acidity, sweetness, and flavor character. Adjusting one element influences the perception and performance of the others.

Our Beverage Balance Model reflects this structured approach. Balanced formulation is achieved by aligning these variables within the constraints of processing conditions, shelf-life expectations, and ingredient selections to produce controlled, repeatable beverage performance.

Processing & Stability Awareness

We evaluate beverage performance under intended processing conditions; however, final validation must be conducted within the client’s production environment.

Variations in equipment, fill levels, thermal exposure, and carbonation systems can influence finished product performance.

Ingredient preferences and label claims directly affect shelf life and stability. Formulations built around fully natural systems, natural colors, or preservative-free structures may require refrigerated distribution, shorter shelf life, or specific processing methods to achieve acceptable performance.

Development recommendations are structured around realistic production and distribution conditions.

Preparing for Beverage Development

Early clarity on the following items helps streamline formulation and reduce unnecessary revisions:

  • Intended distribution model (local refrigerated vs ambient retail)
  • Target shelf life expectations
  • Packaging format and processing method
  • Identified co-packer or production pathway
  • Target price range and ingredient positioning

Beverage development is iterative. Refinement may require multiple adjustment phases depending on profile targets, ingredient constraints, and processing compatibility.

Deliverables

Each development project includes structured technical documentation designed to support formulation review, labeling preparation, regulatory planning, and production alignment within your intended manufacturing environment.

Finished Beverage Formula

Complete formulation structured for production-scale replication.

Ingredient & Allergen Statement

Documentation formatted for labeling review and compliance reference.

Nutritional Panel Calculations

Structured nutrient breakdown for regulatory labeling purposes.

Processing & Mixing Guidelines

Parameters aligned with intended manufacturing conditions.

All nutritional calculations, ingredient statements, and processing guidance are provided based on available ingredient specifications and project parameters at the time of development. Final verification and regulatory review should be conducted by the client prior to commercial production and label printing.

Project Structure & Fees

R&D projects are conducted in defined lab time blocks and billed hourly.

Initial development requires a prepaid 8-hour block. As remaining project time approaches two hours, an additional 8-hour block is initiated to maintain continuity.

Unused development retainers may be credited toward subsequent flavor production orders.

This structure supports focused development, controlled progress, and measurable outcomes.

Scope of Services

Dayton Flavors develops beverage formulas and manufactures flavor systems.

Ingredient sourcing beyond the flavor system, finished beverage production, packaging procurement, co-packer agreements, and distribution planning remain the responsibility of the client or their contracted partners.

We may provide guidance based on experience, but operational execution is managed by the client’s production network.
